History

Our Roots: A Visionary Beginning
In 1912, a visionary man, Francisco Villegas Melguizo, full of dreams and goals, laid the first stone of what would become Proterra. He bought a farm called Hacienda El Oriente, and with the mule, ox, and rudimentary machinery, combined with his entrepreneurial spirit, he paved the way for the company’s future.
His son, Heliodoro, continued the journey, overcoming challenges like the 1930s crisis, and together with his wife Irma, affectionately known as “Mime”, they built, brick by brick, the foundation and values of the family business. Currently, the 4th generation is managing the company following the proud legacy inherited from their ancestor.
